25th November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

25th November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Every 25th of November, the world observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a day dedicated to raising awareness and combating one of the most pervasive human rights violations. This date also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that runs until 10th December, Human Rights Day, aiming to foster awareness and promote actions to end gender violence.

The Significance of 25th November

The 25th of November was declared an international day in 1999 by the UN, in honor of the Mirabal sisters, Dominican activists who were brutally murdered in 1960 for opposing the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. This date has since become a symbol of resistance and justice, encouraging governments, organizations, and civil society to unite against all forms of violence toward women.

Gender-Based Violence: A Global Crisis

Violence against women takes many forms:

  • Physical violence: physical harm inside or outside the home.
  • Psychological violence: manipulation, control, and threats that damage self-esteem.
  • Sexual violence: abuse, harassment, and rape.
  • Economic violence: control over financial resources, limiting independence.
  • Digital violence: harassment and misogyny through technology and social media.

Each form of violence has devastating effects on victims, impacting their physical and mental health, restricting their growth, and perpetuating gender inequality.

16 Days of Activism: From Awareness to Action

The 16 Days of Activism provide an opportunity to amplify voices, raise awareness, and promote concrete actions. Throughout this period, campaigns are held worldwide:

  • Workshops and educational talks about gender-based violence.
  • Social mobilizations and marches demanding effective public policies.
  • Social media campaigns aimed at changing perceptions and behaviors.
  • Illuminating landmarks in orange, the symbolic color of the campaign.

Everyone’s Responsibility

Ending violence against women requires commitment from all sectors of society:

  • Governments: must enforce laws to protect victims and penalize perpetrators.
  • Businesses and organizations: should foster safe environments and promote gender equality.
  • Civil society: must raise awareness, support victims, and reject violence.
  • Individuals: should challenge violent and sexist behaviors within their circles.

A Future Free from Violence

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women reminds us that this fight cannot be limited to one day or the 16 days of activism. Eliminating gender-based violence demands continuous efforts throughout the year. Every action matters, from supporting victims to promoting equality and creating safe spaces.

At Santana Globally We Care, we stand united in this cause and reaffirm our commitment to building a future where women live with dignity and free from violence. We encourage everyone to participate in the 16-day campaign and continue this vital work all year long.

Change is possible, and it starts with each of us. Together, we can build a safer and more just society for all women.
