A Haven of Hope: A Community Effort to Combat Domestic Violence

The recent event A Haven of Hope”, organized by The Women’s Social Club Houston of Santana Globally We Care (SGWC), gathered a diverse group of individuals dedicated to addressing the urgent issue of domestic violence. This gathering featured insightful presentations on key topics:

  • The Alarming Prevalence of Domestic Violence: Officer Sierra of the Houston Police Department shed light on the often-hidden nature of this crime and its devastating impact on victims and their families. He emphasized the importance of early intervention and highlighted the crucial role the Houston Police Department plays in providing victim support services, connecting them with resources, and ensuring their safety.
  • The Physical and Emotional Toll of Domestic Violence: Emergency healthcare professional Ana Cordova shared firsthand experiences about the profound physical and emotional impact domestic violence has on victims. She discussed the challenges healthcare professionals face in identifying and supporting victims, often masked by complex injuries and emotional distress. Cordova underscored the importance of compassion, understanding, and timely intervention to help individuals rebuild their lives and highlighted the role of organizations like SGWC that provide essential support services, including safe housing and counseling. She encouraged attendees to contribute to this noble cause, emphasizing the power of collective action to make a positive difference in survivors’ lives.
  • Empowering Survivors and Breaking the Cycle of Abuse: Bianca Gavarrete, co-founder and president of SGWC, shared the inspiring story behind the creation of the Emergency Project. Driven by her own experiences with domestic violence, she designed SGWC’s Emergency Project to provide immediate support and resources to victims. This project offers essential services such as temporary housing, food, personal care items, and counseling to help survivors rebuild their lives. Gavarrete emphasized the importance of community support in empowering victims and breaking the cycle of abuse.

Thanks to the support of Fiesta en Guadalajara Restaurant, owned by brothers Ignacio Serna and Hugo Serna, emergency health specialist Ana Cordova, Officer Sierra of the Houston Police Department, and the event attendees, Santana Globally We Care will be able to continue its vital mission of empowering domestic violence survivors. The funds raised will directly support SGWC’s projects.

By raising awareness, providing support services, and fostering community partnerships, we can work together to create a safer future for all.
